Impressions

Having run various versions of TomTom satnavs over the years and having been constantly frustrated by the cost of updating maps, only to find them to be no better than before, I was attracted by the lifetime mapping offer with the Noza Tec.

It was around £60 when I bought it a while ago but they can be purchased for less now via Amazon and numerous Ebay sellers. Check our own Amazon Store!

So, is it too cheap to be any good? Short answer to that is NO! It’s actually very good at its job as a satnav without even considering all the other functions that it can perform.

It looks a bit like a large iPhone but it’s immediately apparent by its ‘feel’ that its a budget device. The touch screen (7”) is flimsy to the touch and the machine emits some horrible beeps and squeals in use. The input required does not seem to be very logical and it takes a little while to remember where each of the settings are.

Settings are comprehensive and apart from vehicle size and weight there are the usual preferred route choices - motorways, tolls, fastest/shortest etc.

With regular use it becomes easier to plan routes and the driving information display is great with road signs, journey times, current speed, speed limits etc. although it becomes tiresome to be told 'you are exceeding the speeeeed limit!’ quite so often, even when almost at a standstill entering a roundabout….

A VERY annoying mapping/routing feature is that when you ignore an instruction to ‘turn around when possible’ because you are allowing it to re-route, it eventually does so but, beware! On several occasions I found that it took us on a tortuous route of some miles only to put us back on the same road close to where we left it but facing the opposite direction!

Niggles aside it is outstanding value for money and there is little need to worry how long a unit will last - at a tiny fraction of big name brands the Noza Tec can almost be regarded as disposable.

Oh, and the mapping seems much more up-to-date than our previous (updated) TomTom ever was!

I have only reviewed the satnav function but as can be seen in the features below it can do far more. With its AV input I guess it can even double as a reversing camera screen. It will play music, movies and even display your ebook and photographs.
