Hello - I would welcome some advice re the question of Breakdown Insurance in Europe and specifically what cover you can get for punctured tyres. We recently bought a Chausson 630 on a Ford base which comes with Ford Europe wide Assist. Like many vehicles it only carries a puncture kit which obviously is no help with a ripped or blown tyre. Ford Assist appears to be provided by the AA in Uk and another organisation in Europe. The AA told me that they treat punctures as breakdowns and most rescue vehicles carrying temporary tyres to get you to safety/ a tyre supplier. The European provider told me they don't provide that service and the most they will do is contact a tyre specialist on your behalf at your expense. Has anyone had e perience of what help is actually given and are there any providers who give better cover? Thanks

Personally I fell if you have the space and weight capacity then carry a spare, mainly for convenience. However, if you do change the wheel yourself then try the effectiveness of the jack beforehand as it will probably be next to useless on it's own. We carry a hydraulic bottle jack as well and need both jacks to get the van off the ground!

Our experience with a puncture abroad was when we were insured with Comfort with RAC breakdown cover. A tyre specialist attended and changed our wheel over to the spare, then got us to follow him to a parking area (an Aire) near to his depot. He then took away our punctured wheel and his firm ordered a replacement tyre which took a couple of days to obtain.
We paid the total bill but the recovery bit (depannage) was reclaimable via the breakdown cover.
In your case I would advise that you buy,in advance, and carry a suitable spare tyre only, so that in the event of a puncture the call out will cover changing the tyre over and you will be on your way.
It's not just about the cost though, it's a real PITA when you get a puncture and have to wait a couple of days for a replacement tyre - we were lucky in that respect because there was a local Aire to use and village market etc to keep us occupied.

Sorry cannot help with your question ... but I was just wondering if having a "Puncture Repair kit" was the norm on large Motorhomes ... as it seems a tad strange to me

As Steve has already said, most newer vehicles don't have spare wheels these days Kathy, just a can of tyre foam in the puncture repair kit that needs to be replaced regularly at certain service intervals.
I have never thought about how the rescue companies treat this, so I will watch the thread with interest.
