Hi Chris, Techno's mention of the Lumix is a good start but there are a bewildering amount of cameras around for that sort of price.
I'm used to using a DSLR Canon and I've got used to having a good lens with image stabilisation which makes for much clearer photos taking away any effect of camera shake, especially when zooming in on something.
However, caromac recently bought a Nikon Coolpix compact camera which is really good and very handy to carry around but lacks this feature which I think is now a must, especially for a point-and-shoot camera.
Using Google I found that there is a compact Canon in your price range - Canon PowerShot SX230 HS (I'm sure there will be others too). There's a review of it
