Jacky, our little dog is not 2 yet but has already made 4 trips to Spain both through France and on the ferry to Santander. He is very laid back and takes it all in his stride. The only problem with going in a motorhome to Spain is the fact that dogs are not allowed on buses unless placed into the luggage hold, something we would not do.
Jacky certainly seems relaxed about life in general.
Is there any chance of giving details of the Vets you've used for the Pet Passport scheme so that, if you recommend them, I can add them to the Google map of recommended Vets in Europe - http://goo.gl/maps/dGJM

Our local vet is Beechfield Veterinary Practice in Doncaster who are excellent. Jacky has had a Pet Passport from being 3 months old. Once the usual innoculations and a rabies jab plus the microchip has been done you are able to travel. You cannot come back into UK until 3 weeks after the rabies jab so always allow for that in the event of any incident which could force you to come back early. Before returning to UK a tape worming tablet must be administered by a vet and the passport stamped. You have 5 days from then to re-enter. We always use a vet in Nerja where we used to live and allow ourselves 5 days to return. In the future though I will be using a vet in Calais or enroute as my friend assures me they are all conversant with the procedure. There is a special area at Calais where you take your dog to be checked and scanned and then travel as usual. Hope this is assuring for any dog owner who would like to take theirs with them into Europe.

This video that I made earlier this year may be of use to those who haven't been to the Pet Passport Office in Coquelles - http://youtu.be/q8cWJWFs0gQ

I would advise using a Vet as far away from the Channel ports as possible for two reasons.

1 – Vets close to Eurotunnel and the ports usually charge more than those in more remote parts of Europe.

2 – If you have the treatment done in Calais, or close by, you need to wait 24 hours before departure and possibly 'waste' a day of your holiday.

Morning all - I am sure most dog owners will know this - but in case you are not aware there were a batch of bad chips fitted a couple of years ago. Our dogs chip failed when in Spain and so had to be re-chipped with a new passport. Plus the necessary wait to come back into the UK.

If you are taking your dog abroad for the first time make sure you get the chip tested before you leave.

mickcope - how much did the Vet charge for the procedure for the Pet Passport scheme?

This is with regard to the Microchip problem -

Failure of Virbec microchips
Virbac have identified a functionality issue with some microchips distributed since 2010. A small number of these microchips have recently malfunctioned.
The following chips with these batch numbers need to be replaced:
Chip numbers up to 900088000202473
Chip numbers 90008800020274 to 900008800259207

If owners are unsure then have the chip checked at their Vet.

Sorry I can't remember as it was mixed in with some other costs for the dog. But don't think it was over the top

Hi. A couple more for the list of recommended vets:
Sabine Ferron-Berjamin, 39, Rue de Rouen, 49400 Saumur, Tel. 02 41 38 77 82
Frederic Pelsy, SCP Veterinaires, 41700 Contres, Tel. 02 54 79 50 11
If memory serves both were in the €25-€30 region for 2 dogs, but we did take our own worming pills with us. Both were helpful and with enough English to augment my 1960 vintage O-level French.
