First ever Scotland trip

Hi ,after a many days in front of the map ,my brain is totally fried.....
We have decided to go to Dumfries and Galloway for our 1st visit to Scotland.
We will be away for 2 weeks(flexible) possibly in may.
I’m looking for site any recommendations!
The only criteria is : walking distance to a shop or pub (dog friendly)
We will be staying for 2 or 3 nights at each site but again this is flexible
