Do you use one?

Caromac has had a Sony PRS-505 for a while now and it really seems to do the job. She enjoys reading the 'classics' that came with it and has added a couple of more recent titles since.

I've just ordered an Amazon Kindle 3G, not just to use as a reader but because it has the possibility of connection to the internet for basic browsing and emailing. Its the latter feature that swung it for me as I hope it will give us the opportunity to keep up with emails when we are on our motorhome travels and outside the range of any wifi.

Looking forward to receiving it and trying out its capabilities 'on the road' and I'd be interested to hear how others get on with theirs....

First impressions? - Amazing piece of kit!

NOT only for downloading books but for the 3G and Wifi capability.

All too often internet access is limited on our travels, sometimes we influence our daily route by where to stop at a McDonalds etc for free wifi - not any more!

We have just spent 3 weeks wild camping next to a beach in Spain and have been able to receive and send emails, keep tabs on Club Motorhome and was able to use the Kindle for basic web browsing (even came across a snotty review of Club Motorhome on another forum  ), kept up on our Facebook etc. - albeit in monochrome with a fiddly 'mouse' action but amazing none the less.

All this internet capability comes at NO EXTRA COST, the only cost being the original purchase price.

It has to be one of the most 'must have' essentials for the often travelling motorhomer.
I use one

Agree its really good. The internet browsing is a bit hard work but much better than nothing.

Main thing is to try and use mobile websites where possible - cuts down on loading times and time-out problems. Lots of websites (BBC News, Facebook etc) have mobile versions.

Yes, I've often read the same

If you read the Amazon T&Cs, the wording is far from clear BTW, it does say the wireless conectivity should only be used for their services. However the 3G model is clearly sold as having free worldwide 3G included so you pays your money and you takes your choice.

The Kindle does come ready bookmarked to access Google and the like - I would have thought if they were going to be so restrictive you would only be able to access their own site or maybe other approved ones.

The inbuilt browser is called 'Experimental' so maybe they could withdraw it if they choose? Who knows BUT in the meantime internet access is available and is fantastic, particularly when roaming abroad!

Make your own mind up

PS. Welcome back jellybean!

Hi Edward,

You can Google something like 'mobile url facebook' etc - you will normally get what you're looking for ie http://m.facebook.com

Different sites use various extra bits to point to their mobile versions so just putting 'm.' in front of the standard url won't always work.

I don't think you need 'www' either with a mobile url

Saves a lot of time with a Kindle if you bookmark the mobile urls to start with .
