hi all,

I have just joined as I will be taking my wife and 2 teenagers (15 & 18) to Spain next year in a motorhome. But most importantly we have never done anything like this before - in fact we've hardly ever been camping.
The initial intention is to hire a big (6 berth) motorhome and get the ferry to Santander, then stopovers to Madrid (short stay) then stopovers to Barcelona (short stay) then back to Santander ... all this in 14 days.

Is this a good plan I ask ?

Am I being over ambitious ?

Will I find stopovers with showers etc ?

I need all the help I can get and any advice would be most welcome :-)

Regards

Ian & Angela
Hi Ian and Angela and :welcome1:

Just a quick reply from me as I'm on some dodgy wifi outside a French supermarket!!

Some more info might help. Will both of you drive and is the 14 days including the ferry travel?

As regards stopovers showers are unlikely at most unless they are campsites so best to use your onboard facilities.

Have you considered driving down through France against cost of ferry? May be a better experience to include France and then the Spanish bit.

Hopefully there will be some ideas from others for you

Hi
I've not used the santander ferry but have motored through France to Spain as suggested by Neil. The cost of the ferry being part of the reason whereas I can enjoy the journey staying on inexpensive aires either in cities or my favourite locations by rivers and canals. If you get All the Aires for France and Spain from Vicarious Books you can pick and choose you stopovers and routes. Rarely are showers available but you could stay on Municipal sites inexpensively with facilities. I think 14 days is ambitious, on our "short" trips we usually take 3 weeks otherwise it feels as if you are driving all the time.

:welcome4: Hi and welcome,
the advice already given is worth every penny, two weeks is too tight for enjoyment and safety.
Question: do you shop at Tesco's, if so you have time to save then send off for a EURO TUNNEL ticket, every tenner gets you thirty and its a quick trip and puts you right on the side of the fast road south. Summer June through to beginning Sept is when France goes on holiday so if you go south it could be crowded on route at several camp sites. But then you could use your on board systems. But remember the 100 litre on board tank will not last long with 4 of you. There's lots of tips so just keep asking or reading. Heed the warnings from others if part of the journey need more attention to security.
I know its a daft question, but did you pass your test after or before 1997?
You will need to find out what size the motor home is you will be getting as if you use toll roads it gets really expensive when you go into Class3. You can get all the way down to Spain by missing toll routes but that will add time.
Santandar ferry will be an arm and a leg unless you book really early but again will save you a lot of time. If you have not driven a large vehicle in Europe plan not to go to far too soon and keep an eye on the old speedo, the fines are on the spot and can, not always be high.
Sorry if I sound like a B.O.F but get it right and you will have a fantastic time with the kids.
