My wife and I are visiting Britain from Australia and travelling around in a 6m van. Our dates are approx. from July 9-August 27. We are planning to be down in Devon/Cornwall from around July 12-23. Will I need to book my campsites now, or can i leave until I arrive up in the UK? I plan 4 night stopovers in 3 locations.Suggestions of good spots would be good too. We also plan to visit Bath, Wales, the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. Do I need to book ahead for the times we are in Britain, or am I likely to just find a site ok? Any advice and recommendations would be most welcome.

Thanks,
John
Think you may need to book at a lot of places ,England is not good for just stopping off ,Also think that you are starting to run into school holidays which make places busy .Bath is good ,in Wales,Gower peninsula very pretty ,Also Snowdon area in North Wales . Don't know Yorkshire that well ,Lake district will be very busy in August ,Keswick Kendal Grassmere all great.Good place to look is English ,Wales ,Lake district ,Tourist web site .

Frank,
Thanks again for your advice. It looks like I should book soon, especially for Devon and Cornwall. I am a Pom, but have lived in Oz for the last 45 years. I used to holiday near Padstow with my family in the 60's. If I was to try and pick perhaps two or three top locations to take my wife down there (she has never visited there) and stay for 4-6 days in each, where would you recommend? We do like being near the water.

Your ideas would be most welcome.

Cheers,
John

Hello John

Glad you are finding time to come to Bath. Bath is my home City and I now live about 9 miles away in a little town named Bradford on Avon. http://www.bradfordonavon.co.uk
Parking in Bath is not easy, most on street parking is zoned for residents, any other space is metered and expensive for more than a few hours. The inner-city car parks tend to be small or have height barriers.
So what is your options
There is the coach park http://www.bathnes.gov.uk/services/parking-and-travel/coach-parking th2 this will be busy but worth a try.
There are 3 park and rides, two with height restrictions.

• Odd Down Park & Ride: 7'2'
• Newbridge Park & Ride 6'6'
• Landsdown Park & Ride is unrestricted

The bus trip down from Landsdown is a pleasant ride passing some fine buildings and is on the 'upmarket' side of town.

The two main camping sites are

Bath Marina http://www.bwml.co.uk this would be my first option for camping as it is nearer to the centre, but still a bus ride or 30 minute level walk. It would be worth dropping them an email to find out about availability for your planned timing.

Newton Mill http://www.newtonmillpark.co.uk/ However, they are building more log cabins and so there is less touring space. .

Bath is not well catered for when it comes to somewhere to stop and I notice there is nothing on Club Motorhome. I am shortly off to Spain for a month but when I come back I am going to trawl around a few pubs and places in the area to see if they are interested in being listed as a Club Motorhome stopover.
Keep in touch

Spinner,

Thanks for your advice re. Bath. It is much appreciated. Due note has been made of parking/overnight stop opportunities.

We will have bikes and will be happy to ride into the town from outside, as long as there are not too many hills!

Bradford on Avon looks to be a place we must visit. You lucky folks! Very pretty!

Enjoy your time in Spain!

Cheers,
John
