Yes all of these little tricks some insurance companies use to try to wriggle out of their fully comp obligations do not affect their obligations to the legal third party cover.
That is small consolation if you have to fight them to the small claims court to cover your own damage or injury claim.
We had a interesting exchange a few years back over a car our son gave his mother, we left the registered keeper as him but we insured it for us to drive and were the owners. One of the claim handlers tried to wriggle saying the registered keeper should have insured it. We were thinking one less name on the Reg Document if and when we sold it. They rolled over in the end but we moved our business the next year.
