HI Just a bit of info if you have a Fiat Ducato 130 multijet , mine is a 2011. But it could happen to other models with similar electrics.
I parked my Ducato up after returning from Portugal in October last year, with half a tank of fuel. It stood for a couple of months & when i came to start her the battery was flat to the point where the ignition lights didn't even come on .
So i charged the battery over night & next day started her up . I noticed the fuel gauge was showing empty & the empty warning light was flashing . After checking whatever i could, I took it to the local electrician who after checking & finding the sender unit & fuel gauge were working fine he said it maybe the case the I will have to take it to the Fiat dealer & have it put on the diagnostics machine & the fuel gauge system recalibrated or what ever.
So i did take it to the Fiat dealer & they did put it on the diagnostic machine & reset fuel gauge system , all works well now . 99 euros
The reason I am writing this is all the forums seems to tell you its the fuel sender in the tank which incorporates the low pressure pump. quite expensive I would imagine! I have heard since this happens on other makes like Peugeot. Also when changing the battery it seems to upset the computer system. Obviously this doesn't always happen but worth noting if you come across the same problem.
Good Luck Bill
