Just at the end of a month touring around Scotland mainland and Isles. Never been before but heard continuously over the years that Scotland was very welcoming to motorhomers and the vast country was very flexible and accommodating to parking up and camping overnight in lay-bys etc. We found the total opposite to be true, new signs up everywhere - no overnight camping! Also many of the pubs that advertised ‘stopovers’ in the winter months are now turning us away. We stayed only 3 of our 35 nights not on a camp site. The mood is definitely changing toward us I think borne by the sheer number on the roads and growing! Time to get back to Europe where we are seriously welcomed and catered for even if our government have restricted that pleasure for us retirees!

    • I can't do anything this year, but can't wait to get back over the channel and be welcomed in almost every village and town next year.

    • What a shame! We were shocked at the huge increase in number of vans on our couple of short trips, so it’s no surprise really. Last year we stoppedWhat a shame! We were shocked at the huge increase in number of vans on our couple of short trips, so it’s no surprise really. Last year we stopped for a swim at loch Morlich on our way up to the Cairngorm car park (authorised Motorhome parking, £5 in honesty box) … and to our horror there were parking bays for 3 or 4 vehicles completely taken up by single motorhomes and camper vans with awnings and gear out, blocking access to other users, cars full of kids (school holidays) having to drive on by because they couldn’t park. We decided not to stay for lunch and flagged down a family to take our spot. This is sadly why we have lost the tolerance in Scotland that we enjoyed in the past. Hope you get away to Europe soon   More ...

Went in August one year and saw hoards of Italian Motorhomers in Convoys of around 15 each. Then heard from locals of the rubbish they leave and toilets being emptied in over farmers gates, a few ruin it for everyone! We have NEVER had a problem with anyone in the winter months, we wild camp a lot and know sites where we can top up and empty out. It is shame though that the UK don't cater for Motorhomes Like Europe do!
