Well phoned around the usual full time insurance companies about getting full time insurance as the wife and I are selling house and going to tour Europe for as long as we want, but no one will insurance us as our motorhome is 16 years old .Our present insurer will insure us for 9 months max so we have to return to UK for 3 months. We will be using my sisters address for the usual stuff DVLA etc.
So do we continue as we are or do we buy a motorhome under 10 years old and get full time insurance ??

Its not the address thats the problem its soon as I say the motorhome is over 10 years old that i get "sorry cant help you"
Cant understand is a new motorhome less likely to have an accident than an older one? Surely its the driver who is the risk .
I would understand if it was breakdown cover I was looking for then that is understandable .

I know this doesnt help you but....
Even for breakdown cover, I feel it would still be wrong, newer vehicles are far more likely to cost a fortune if and when they do go wrong.
For me an older vehicle is less of a risk for them.
I had the same with CMC travel insurance.
They refused to give me travel insurance, because of the age of our motorhome, dispite me having separate breakdown cover!
So they lost have my custom now.

I feel your pain, Dave ... I had similar problems when I told insurance companies that Snail was my "Sole" vehicle ... several would not even quote ... Insurance companies seem to be a law unto themselves ... I eventually got a good quote from Adrian Flux, which was funny because last year they quoted me a ridiculous price ... they are inconsistent and confusing and IMHO should be better regulated to stop the silliness ... but not holding my breath for that to happen
Hope you get sorted ... there is a page on Facebook if you are on there https://en-gb.facebook.com/motorhomefulltime/ ... or google Motorhome full time ... there are forums that seem to specialise in fulltime

Hi,
Please feel free to try our sister company HIC Insurance,
They have a specific scheme to cater for this type of insurance.

I followed Dan's advice and phoned HIC insurance and received a quote of £1600 for full time and full cover of Europe, its a big jump from the £400 its costs at the moment which is only for 9 months travelling in 12 month period, but at least I know I'm covered. The rep did say the full quote could be less when I go through the full quote details. At least there is a company out there that will cover older vehicles.
thanks Dan

Hi,
Hopefully you managed to get it sorted satisfactorily.
Regards,
Dan.
We are faced with the same problem, tried other companies and Dan of Adrian Flux also tried for us (very helpful chap btw) either the van being over 10 years old or the fact we don’t have another vehicle has meant that a few companies wouldn’t even quote. Very frustrating as I have been with comfort for years and always had full 12months cover, now that we are no longer working and can actually travel Europe for a year or two ... they are limiting us to 9 months ... so at the end of the year we will need to decide whether to stay in the UK for 3 months or get full time insurance. Seems strange that they all seem to have stopped 365 days European cover, my guess is that they are trying to avoid insuring ‘new age travellers’ or something.
