Some information on the attachment about the use of the EHIC in Europe. We have used ours in Germany and it worked out very well. If you contact one of the Insurers who front up the German scheme, we used AOK, they log you into the system and then issue you with a form that both doctor and hospital can use in recovering the cost of your treatment from them.
No personal experience of Spain and France but maybe others have and can add it to the thread.
Finally check the date on your card as many of them have not been renewed and have run out
