Hi - We have just sold our caravan and ordered a campervan to pick up next year.
We intend making use of the Aires sites and wild camping. We are looking at travelling around Spain and Portugal for around 5 months and wondering what the best way is to pay our way. Last year we took our caravan to Germany and took cash (Euros) with us and kept it in a safe. It did seem the easiest way to pay for things. However, I am a bit nervous about taking too much cash, especially if we are not staying in caravan parks. The only cards we have is a UK Visa Debit Card, Australian Visa Credit card and an Australian Debit Card.
Does anyone know if ATM's are common in Spain and Portugal and, if so, are the fees high or could anyone suggest anything else? We would appreciate any advice. Cheers.

As regards money I think you will find plenty of ATM's and that cards are generally acceptable.
Of course there will remain a need for some cash and when topping up I always take the maximum available as there is always a '% plus a one off fee'. If you only get say 50 euro out you will always pay this so for 300 euro you will still pay that same fee. Hope that makes sense. You should also find out what transaction charge you will pay. For example my own credit card makes no charge for purchases and gives the 'commercial' exchange rate. The practice now, is increasingly a choice between euro and (for us) GBP at the point of sale. For us it is definitely euro as then we pay no fee. If we were to select GBP it would always include about 3% mark up.
Only small differences but over a period of time these little savings make a difference,
