Just in case anyone is not aware of the new Breathlyser law in France starting 1st July 2012 here's a link to the info Breathlyser Law
Albeit it comes into force on the 1st July - apparently the Police will not be enforcing the law until 1st November but with French Law you never know.

The kits are available from between 1-2 euros in petrol stations and large supermarkets such as Carrefour.

It never stopped being compulsory
They just postponed enforcement(indefinitely) and of course the French don't buy them.
The only reason the government didn't wipe it out completely is they would have faced a backlash from the manufacturers and those holding large stock of now worthless product.
As the current stocks expire (2 yr shelf life) they will cease to be manufactured.
