We've been asked about tips and places to stay in Croatia. So here goes...
Croatia is mostly long and thin along the Adriatic Sea. Northern Croatia is a day's drive for residents of Southern Germany (Bavaria and Munich especially). So there are lots of Germans in the north. That's not a bad thing, but their apparent preference for camp sites is (for us): they are large, with all facilities on-site. Watch out for their two-week half term at the end of May (Pentecost Holiday).
We liked the south:
Dubrovnik - stay at Kate's Camping at Mlini and catch a boat into Dubrovnik, but avoid days when there are multiple cruise liners in port.
Peljesac Peninsula - go right to the far end, Loviste where there are two good sites, but take as much fresh fruit and veg with you as you can. The local supply is not up to much in the shop (singular). Listen out for the jackals (really, there is a sub-species present).
We also found a very good site at Drage, just north of Split. It's just within range of the German horde, but the location (and size) is much nicer than the few sites we tried further north.
We left soon after this stay because of the weather and went home (very slowly) via western Slovenia, Austria and Germany.
If we go again, we will explore the islands, the inter-island ferries are quite cheap and fairly frequent. They are all run by Jadrolinija.
