Fiat ducato 1.9 power loss and total failure
after a nights sleep the quest was on, the first inkling was one falter of the engine on a flat road about 35 mph, loss of power but still drivable, about 30 miles further on huge amounts of black smoke and we were going no further, the first job repair the broken wire that was found by the recovery man, this was located on the sensor along the breather pipe from the cam cover to the emissions recovery air intake, the wire had broken off right down inside of the removable plug, so no choice but to cut the other wire and repair with two spade terminals (which were the smaller red radio speaker ones), try the engine it did start but it only ran for 30 to 40 seconds on tick over and black smoke trying to escape from every where, so fuel is not a problem so starting at the air cleaner I made my way to the turbo charger checking there was no obstruction, the last connection is only secured by a u shaped clamp and a 10 mm bolt easy, the turbo fan should turn easily but it was fouling on something so a little gentle coaxing back and forward had it turning freely, so the intake of air was ok, the other side of the turbo charger was where a problem occurred, (for those that do not know the turbo has two sets of fan blades one set in the exhaust system and the other in the air intake joined by the same shaft, the exhaust gasses turn the fan which in turn rotates the intake fan forcing more air into the engine to increase power) so the next item from the turbo is the catalytic converter (this item is at the top of the thief's list for scrap and go missing on a regular basis £40 for him and probably £180 for you to by the next one and that is fitted with nice new bolts so even easier to steal the replacement one) anyway I digress, off with the cat lots of soot and stuff falls out from the turbo, start the engine and we are making progress the engine runs and revs up no problem and I was surprised how little noise was made with no exhaust , the first mistake was to wipe off the cat flange and blow as hard as I could into the cat but as it was blocked once the seal of my face was removed all the loose soot came out under pressure and I looked like a cartoon character, with lots of gentle tapping lots of tiny pieces of coal look alike came out, which would have been the oil vapour from the engine breather which the broken wire controlled, then I reconnected the cat ran the engine again all was fine after the soot that had passed into the silencer was blown out, now alls well that ends well and in a couple of weeks we will endeavour to head off into the unknown, keep safe out there, alan.
